The Power of an Ancient Spiritual Discipline

Updated: Sep 22, 2022

Unless you "live off the grid," your mind and soul are bombarded non-stop by voices vying for your attention. We are by far the most distracted generation ever alive on earth. Whether it's political or social issues, the latest recipe and news, our limited focus is overloaded all day long.

How do we cultivate a deep communion with the Lord in the flood of distractions?

It is by reviving an ancient spiritual discipline.

We can find an expression of prayer and a way of connecting with God that is prevalent in scripture but not often practiced in the Western evangelical church. In some faith traditions it is embraced and greatly admired, but in others it is forgotten and coined to be an antiquated practice with no impact in our times. This kind of spiritual practice is a vitally important expression of worship which quiets the soul and opens the heart to the Lord.

Which is “the prayer of silence and meditation on the Word of God.”

King David was well aware of and knew the importance of this posture as outlined in his writings, “Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation” (Psalm 62:1), and “My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him” (Psalm 62:5).

David knew that being silent before God takes effort, but he also knew it also yields amazing results. When we take some time to slow down, in order to quiet our heart and mind, and to remember where our true hope comes from, we will find our hope renewed and our hearts opened and realigned with the Father.

Do you feel like you are lost in the swirling of voices and distraction around you? This week, maybe even today, take at least 15 minutes – step away, find a still place, turn off technology, quiet your soul and open your heart to the Lord.

This profound act of devotion may be exactly what we need to align our lives and focus on our Creator!! Out of this time drinking from the fountain of Living Waters, much revelation knowledge can be birthed.
